When Google hit the reset button and had a complete overhaul, it is safe to say that the results shocked people. It turns out, Alphabet, which used to be a subsidiary of Google. Now all of Google’s initiatives will be overseen by Alphabet.
But what does this mean for you, your website, or your business? Even if you are just a general Google user, will there be changes in the way you use Google’s products or services.

As a Google User, it will not affect you as much
According to former Google CEO, now Alphabet CEO Larry Page, nothing drastic will happen to the products and services Google offers. Actually, now that Google is part of an umbrella company, it will enable Google to focus on improving these products and continue working on the Google identity. In fact, the biggest change with Google is the newly appointed CEO, Sundar Pichai, who used to be the Senior Vice President of Products, handling day-to-day operations in Google.
Not experimenting on the existing products and services does not mean that we will not see changes being churned out. Now that Google can focus on itself, innovative projects that have only existed on paper may actually happen now. The Google Glass, Project Wing, Project Loon, or Google’s self-driving cars may get the greenlight.
It is not going to affect SEO, but…
Google is continuously making changes, which means at one point they will announce something that can affect SEO. Take the Mobilepocalypse for instance, a lot of websites had to scramble to adapt to the new Google search algorithm. This can happen again and if you are a business or website that is banking on SEO to rake in a wide range of audience, you need to be ready for this.
However, Google’s move to Alphabet is unlikely to have any direct effect on the current Google search algorithm, which means you are still good in terms of SEO.
So what is the big deal with Alphabet?
Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to change the world and the role of technology in making those changes happen, and doing this restructuring is, in Page’s opinion, the best way to do it.
While Alphabet Inc. is enabling all the subsidiaries to focus on creating their own identity, their own codes and cultures, the motivations behind Alphabet Inc. and its business strategies remain understandably vague. But more people are assuming that it is because this allows Page to work on different projects, which usually involves technology and health that may not be under the jurisdiction of what Google is, without limitation or suspicion.
Why did they change to Alphabet in the first place?
The restructuring of the tech company has baffled many people, including experts in the tech industry. Google isn’t the only brand under the holding company Alphabet to be slimmed down with new directors helming different projects. Calico, Fiber, Robotics, and Nest are just some of what Alphabet aims to develop through their umbrella of brands.
Larry Page explains that he and Sergey are serious about innovation, and to stay relevant most especially in the tech industry, they needed to get out of their comfort zone. Being satisfied with only making small changes may not help them achieve the big change they’re aiming for.
The plan is to be able to appoint headstrong CEO’s for each brand so they can run these brands independently without needing to be related to one another.
If you are still getting used to Alphabet, you are not alone, even Larry Page had to admit as much when he concluded his announcement. But whether or not Alphabet gets to stick to people’s minds, it would not matter much since Google will still be at the helm of the tech world.
Besides, judging by what Alphabet wants to develop through its brands, most of their plans are for future use, so there is still plenty of time to get used to them and get acquainted with them.
